The Pico do Arieiro is the third highest peak on the island at 1818 meters. It can be reached by car and offers spectacular views when the weather is good. If you are taking a taxi to Santana, and you have hired the driver for the day, then this should be one of your stop-off points where you will also find a cafe, shop, and rest rooms. Whilst the sun is still warm the wind can be very chilly so it's worth taking an extra layer of clothes. In winter snow lands on these peaks!

The views reaching Pico do Arieiro are as stunning as the place itself. The picture to the right was taken on the climb to Pico do Arieiro and looks down on the South coast near Funchal. Another good reason for taking a "taxi tour" rather than driving yourself. Below, not native to Madeira but this band of wooden pipe players seemed to fit the mood and scenery when reaching Pico do Arieiro.
