Câmara de Lobos is a short drive from Funchal and is a beautiful much-photographed village. Many fisherman still operate from this village and their brightly painted boats are one of the landmarks of Câmara de Lobos. There is a good selection of cafes and restaurants here and, if visiting Madeira in late June, make sure you visit their "Feast of St Peter" which is celebrated on the 29th June.
